Sweet Anxiety pastel chalks on card paper 12” x16”
PAULINE AUBEY
I always was fascinated by pretty things, dolls, glamorous female icons… and grotesque art. “Sweet Anxiety” mixes all these elements. I see this piece’s subject as a “dollified” Hitchcock heroine trapped in a seducing candy setting that eventually proves devouring.
The facial expression, with its strong affirmed features, contrasts with the smoothly blended surface. Viewed from a distance, the face can look almost caricaturish and tensed, while looking closely its smooth texture combined with its warm colors make it look quieter and more appealing.
I always wanted to paint a peppermint candy pattern. In the form of a tiled setting, it conveys a repetitive, oppressive and alienating feeling – reminiscent of our obsessions and how their destructive appeal can turn their subjects into objects.
