REMODELORS COUNCIL NEWS
Writer's Block and Your Business A
fter writing this column all year, I have a new appreciation for the
idea of “writer’s block.” Staring at a blank piece of computerized paper on my screen, I keep asking myself, “What can I write about now?” And I’m trying not to think about the fact that I still have two more columns to pen before passing on the torch.
So I start thinking (and talking) to myself, wondering how writer’s block is related to one’s livelihood. Often in business and work, we feel like we’re just not getting where we want, that we’ve stagnated and don’t know what to do about it. We’ve attended seminars, read articles and books on the subject, and still don’t feel like we’re making progress.
Well, I don’t know what to tell you. (Just kidding!) You might need the perspective of an outsider. It could be a friend, colleague, a peer group, a consultant perhaps—someone with experience who has accomplished what you strive for.
Article by 2011 RMC President Rob Hellyer, CGR, GMB, CAPS, Premier Remodeling & Construction LP
Perhaps the approach that I have just taken with this article warrants consideration. By that I mean, why not look for something in your life that shares a common thread with your current situation or challenge?
Choose something that you feel you know how to handle, then look to see how you can tie that back to what you are trying to accomplish. For example, if your dilemma is how to handle an employee or coworker, try removing yourself from the personal perspective of that relationship. How would you advise a colleague in that situation?
One thing is certain; don’t keep doing the same thing that has been unsuccessful in the past merely because it’s what you know. Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
There you have it. I have successfully (you may beg to differ) overcome my writer’s block. Ten down, two to go!
