DR. JOSHUA DUFFY: PROPER DIET IS THE KEY TO HEALTH

by Karen Adams D

r. Joshua Duffy, a chiropractor who practices integrative medicine with Medical Centers of Northern New Jersey, in Ridgewood, wants people to know that they really are what they eat. “Proper diet is essential to health,” he says. “And some of the foods we think are healthy may not agree with a body’s chemistry, causing food sensitivities.” Food sensitivity, he explains, is often the key to many health prob- lems, such as weight gain, migraines, ADHD, stomach disorders, female issues and more. But they can be difficult to identify, especially if they don’t appear immediately. “A food sensitivity can manifest hours to days later, when you feel crummy and you may not know why,” he says. He explains that if we eat something to which the body is sensi- tive, such as chocolate or coffee, it acts as a trigger and causes inflammation in the body, and we end up feeling bad. “There’s a direct correlation with how much inflammation you have in your body and how healthy you are,” he says. “You have to ask yourself, ‘Why do I feel bad some days but not others?’” At his office, comprehensive testing is the first step to identifying sensitivities. The center also offers allergy testing for airborne allergens, such as pollen and mold. “People are spend- ing thousands of dollars on histamines for allergies, but those drugs have side effects,” Duffy warns, adding that there are natural ways to control allergies. Duffy’s integrative practice is sup- ported by a network of specialists, in- cluding medical doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists and nutrition coun- selors. “We take a holistic approach to health,” Duffy says. “We provide a comprehensive approach based on your body’s chemistry, because what might work for someone else might not work for you.”
