City & Guilds Certificate in Electrical Installation (Electrotechnical Technology) N

How long? One year

What do I need?

Four GCSEs at Grade D or above, including GCSE Mathematics at Grade C. You should also possess good practical abilities. (Entry requirements may be waived for mature students over the age of 19, subject to initial assessment/interview.) Students progressing from Foundation Learning in Electrical Installation must have satisfactorily completed all components.

What will I study?

This course provides a solid grounding in the Electrotechnical industry, and offers sound basic training for prospective electricians. It aims to provide knowledge and awareness of the techniques, craft skills, technology and related science required for electrical installation work, and also provides an understanding of the regulations and Health and Safety requirements governing electrical installation processes, including knowledge of the organisation and structure of the industry within which these are carried out.

Core Units include:

• Unit 1: Working Effectively and Safely in an Electrotechnical Environment

• Unit 2: Principles of Electrotechnology

• Unit 3: Application of Health and Safety and Electrical Principles.

Occupational Units include:

• Unit 4: Installation (Buildings and Structures) • Unit 5: Electrical Maintenance (subject to sufficient numbers).

In special circumstances, students who enrol without a GCSE in Mathematics and English at Grade C or above will be required to attend and re-sit these GCSEs to improve their grades to at least Grade C.

How will I be assessed?

For the main Electrotechnical Certificate, you’ll complete practical activities in the College’s workshops, as well as final practical assessments for Unit 3 and any chosen occupational unit. There are four online examinations for the City & Guilds 2330, one for each unit.

What can I do next?

Work within the industry and return to college to complete your training through day-release courses on an Advanced Apprenticeship. You may also progress to BTEC National Engineering courses at Level 3.
