CONTENTS Media Studies – AS/A2 Level


If you would like to work in the media and are interested in current affairs and the world around you, this course is for you. Combining practical and theoretical study, it enables you to explore different forms of the media, and understand how they operate. In each year of the course, you’ll have the option to produce a print, video or radio product, and you’ll also learn about the history of the various media, the commercial and industrial structure of production and circulation, and the limitations placed on them by governments and society.


First year modules include Foundation Portfolio, which will see you creating a new music magazine using a Mac computer and either TV Drama or Radio Drama plus Institutions and Audiences. Second year modules include an Advanced Portfolio practical project; and Critical Perspectives in the Media. You should have an enquiring mind, regularly read and watch news programmes, and be able to work independently and in groups.


Minimum Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including English or Media.


Physics – AS/A2 Level


Did you enjoy Mathematics and Science at GSCE Level? Are you looking for a career that requires good scientific knowledge, problem-solving skills and logical thinking? If so, Physics A Level could be for you, and can help open the door to a huge range of careers in computing, engineering, industry, finance, medicine and other areas. There is a shortage of people with Physics degrees and they are in great demand in all aspects of the world of work.


This is a traditional programme of study, designed to give you a solid background in Physics, and includes such subjects as Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity; Mechanics, Materials and Waves; and Investigative and Practical Skills. You’ll also carry out experimental work as part of the course. Through the Faulke’s Telescope Project, we are able to control telescopes in Australia and Hawaii via the internet and view objects of interest in their night sky during our daylight hours, and this forms part of the Astrophysics option. You’ll need to enjoy learning about the Universe and show commitment to learning theoretical concepts and ideas. You should also be studying AS Mathematics.


Minimum Entry Requirements


Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including Mathematics Grade B at Higher Level and either BB in GCSE Science or B in GCSE Physics.


Psychology – AS/A2 Level


Are you interested in human behaviour and what makes humans behave as they do? Do you want to work with people? If so, you may enjoy Psychology A Level. On this course, you’ll develop an awareness of how psychologists understand human behaviour from a variety of different psychological perspectives, and study factors such as the effect of the brain or the influence of other people upon behaviour.


In Year 1, you’ll cover such subjects as memory - the most complex entity in the human brain; psychological studies of parent/ child bonds; causes of mental health problems; the causes and effects of stress; and the impact of social factors upon behaviour. In Year 2, you’ll look at three topics chosen from the following areas of psychological research; biological rhythms i.e. sleep, eating behaviours, gender relationships or aggression. In addition, you will examine explanations of psychological disorders such as schizophrenia, depression or anxiety. You’ll also investigate one of the following contemporary applications; media psychology, the psychology of addictive behaviour or anomalistic psychology in addition to extending your understanding of research methodology.

Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including English Language, Mathematics and a Science.


Religious Studies (Philosophy) – AS/A2 Level


This course will provide you with a good grounding in key philosophical concepts, themes, texts and techniques. You’ll develop your abilities to analyse philosophical writings and contribute towards the process of debate. You’ll also gain a set of transferable skills that can be applied successfully to other subjects and written subjects and arguments you encounter in your everyday life. Beliefs about the nature of existence, morality, politics and the existence of God will be discussed and challenged, and you should be prepared to evaluate and re-consider your own beliefs on many fundamental issues.


Minimum Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including English.
