Accounting – AS/A2 Level

As well as possessing excellent numeracy and literacy skills, today’s accountants need to be skilled communicators as your prime role will be evaluating and advising how businesses can best meet their objectives. An A Level in Accounting is very challenging, calling for commitment, an analytical approach and an interest in modern business. This course provides an excellent foundation in modern accounting techniques, and covers aspects of both Financial and Management Accounting, including:


• Book-keeping and accounting records • Profit and loss accounts, balance sheets and budgeting


• Business finance, partnership accounting, limited company accounts


• Manufacturing accounts, costing systems and capital investment.


You’ll study two modules at both AS and A2 level, and each module will be assessed by an external examination.


Minimum Entry Requirements


Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including English Language and Mathematics.


Art & Design (Fine Art) – AS/A2 Level


On this course, you’ll be encouraged to work with a variety of media and techniques, including acrylics, charcoal, pastel, collage and montage, using a variety of sources, including life models and still life. Particular emphasis is on observation and developing an understanding of line, shape, form, colour, tone, pattern and texture. Using a personal and individual response, you’ll produce a selection of coursework, a controlled assignment under exam conditions, a major in-depth study of an aspect of particular interest, and a controlled test produced over a 15-hour period. You’ll need to be imaginative, intuitive, aware of other artists’ work, both past and present, willing to put in extra hours and have a achieved a Grade C in Art and Design GCSE.


Minimum Entry Requirements Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including Art or Design.


Biology – AS/A2 Level


In South East Asia, the skies are dark with smoke as the last Bornean rainforests are burned to grow palms; in Kenya 350 people die each day from AIDS. Biologists are concerned with these issues. They work in the fields of cell biology, medicine, food production and ecology, and the work they do is vital to us all.


Covering a wide range of subjects, from molecular biology to ecosystems, from micro-organisms to mammoths, Biology is one of the most popular A Level subjects in the country. Many students enjoy the subject so much they progress to a biologically related degree course, such as Veterinary Science, Medicine, Pharmacy, Environmental Science, Horticulture or Forestry, or take up careers in law, computing, accounting or teaching. In the first year, you’ll study Biology and Disease, The Variety of Living Organisms and Investigative and Practical Skills, and in the second year units include Population and The Environment, Control in Cells and in Organisms and Investigative and Practical Skills. You should be curious about how life works and have sound opinions on biological/environmental issues.


Minimum Entry Requirements


Five GCSEs at Grades A* - C including BB in Science or B in Biology or a merit grade in BTEC First in Science. You are also advised to consider taking AS Chemistry alongside this subject.


This is a mainly practical course, although it also includes the history of photography. You don’t need any prior knowledge, but you should have interest and enthusiasm for the subject, enjoy the creative process, and be willing to put in additional hours. You’ll learn how to use 35mm SLR and digital cameras in an effective and creative way, and will study different styles, genres and photographic traditions, including portraiture, documentary, photo- journalism, landscape photography, still life and experimental imagery. As well as colour assignments, you’ll process film and print in black and white printing techniques, and produce digital images to a high standard. Presentation, layout and mounting are also taught, and you’ll learn creative and compositional skills. This course is assessed through a combination of coursework, a major project of personal significance and two controlled assignments.
