Qualifications and skills

Our mission is to enable you to achieve your full learning and skills potential – whether you’re looking for a job, career progression or personal development – by providing a whole range of qualifications, suitable for every age and ability.
Foundation Learning
These programmes provide a great starting point and are designed to meet your individual needs, enabling you to progress through to further levels of achievement. As well as a range of vocational pathways, you’ll also study for qualifications in English and Maths as well as Personal & Social Development.
English and Mathematics qualifications
All Full-time students are given the opportunity to develop their skills in Maths and English whilst studying for their main qualifications. For students who do not already have a Level 2 in these skill areas, we will work with you to help you gain accreditation at a suitable level. Whilst skills qualifications are available to all Full-time students, they form an essential component of Apprenticeship programmes.
BTEC First & National Qualifications
These highly regarded qualifications will help prepare you for Further and Higher Education, or employment, and are based around an occupational area.
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)
NVQs can be studied at Levels 1, 2 and 3, in many different subjects. They allow you to study and train on specific work-based programmes, demonstrating you have the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to work in your chosen occupational area.
A Levels
Studying A Levels provides an academic route that can lead to Higher Education in the form of a degree or higher level qualifications. You can combine your A Levels with other qualifications at the College, if you wish.
Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)
For many years, Northampton College has worked in partnership with The University of Northampton to develop a range of practically and vocationally-oriented Higher Education courses. Higher National Diplomas are taught at Northampton College, although you will actually be a student of The University of Northampton.
These qualifications help you to relate practical activities to the theory, and are studied at undergraduate level. You’d normally need at least one A level, or equivalent, to study at this level and they enable you to progress to degree level or employment.
Whereas traditional degrees tend to concentrate on gaining knowledge, HNDs focus on giving you practical, ‘learning by doing’ experience, equipping you with the necessary skills to do a particular job.
HNDs are highly-valued qualifications, widely recognised by industry both in the UK and overseas. They’re mainly assessed by assignments, projects and practical tasks, which is ideal for those who don’t like exams!
If you choose to study a Higher National Diploma at Northampton College, you may be able to ‘top up’ to degree level, by studying at The University of Northampton or another university.
