Revealing what students really want to ask…

What if I can’t make my mind up what to do?

Don’t worry, it’s a big decision trying to work out what to study and we understand it can be very difficult. Think about what you’re interested in, which subjects you’re best at, talk to your teachers at school and make sure you come to one of our Open Events, where you can have a chat with our tutors about the options open to you.

What if I change my mind about my course?

Again, don’t worry. Once you’ve started your course, if you decide it isn’t for you and you’d like to change, that’s okay. We usually encourage students to change course within the first half term, if places are available and if there is a good reason.

What if my GCSE results aren’t as good as I expected?

That isn’t a problem. Once you’ve got your results, if they aren’t as good as expected, come and talk to us and we’ll look at your options. We’ll advise you on the right course for you.

Can I take a different subject to my GCSE subjects?

Yes, there are lots of subjects to choose from, as you’ll discover when you look through the pages of this directory. There may be certain entry requirements, so you’ll need to check what’s required under the ‘What do I need?’ heading.

Who can I talk to if I have a problem?

At the start of your course, you’ll be allocated a Personal Tutor, who will provide help and advice throughout your course. You’ll meet regularly with your Personal Tutor to discuss your progress and decide on your learning targets. College Counsellors and Student Mentors are also on hand, offering a free, confidential service, which gives you the opportunity to discuss anything you’re concerned about.

Mentors and Student Counsellors can provide extra help and support on any issues that may be causing difficulty.

What’s the difference between going to school and attending College?

You’ll find a much more adult environment at college, and you’ll be mixing with people of all ages, from all backgrounds. It’s a very safe, supportive environment, however, and will prepare you well for Higher Education or the world of work.

Will college work be much harder?

You’ll probably find it a little different to school work, as in most cases you’ll be specialising in your chosen subject, so you’ll find the work much more in-depth and self-directed. Hopefully, this will make it all the more interesting.

How will I get to college?

You can travel from home to college on public transport and, in certain cases, you may qualify for subsidised travel, subject to certain criteria.

How many hours a week will I have to study?

On a full-time course you’ll generally be in class for around 15 hours a week, although different courses vary, but you will need to study independently too. We expect 100% attendance from all our students, as an indication of your commitment to your studies and personal learning.

What if I need extra support?

Our Student Services Team can advise on any issue relating to student welfare and financial support available. The library offers a fantastic range of resources and facilities, and will support you in your studies and personal and professional development. Learning Assistants are available to help with independent study. Our Additional Support Team offers help to those students with health problems, learning difficulties, disabilities or problems with reading, writing or numbers. Sign language support is available if requested.

Are there any clubs to join?

Yes, the Students’ Union organises clubs, activities, trips and events; there are excellent sports facilities; and through our Enrichment Programme, open to all full-time students, you can enjoy a whole range of activities, from music and dance through to driving test theory and religious studies.

What will I eat?

Don’t worry, you won’t starve! There are refectories and cafés on all sites, giving you a good choice of healthy meals, snacks and drinks.

How safe is the College? The College is very safe and our students tell us this all the time. We have a strong anti-bullying policy and an excellent record on safeguarding; but if at any time you do not feel safe you should talk to your Personal Tutor or someone in Student Services.
