What will I study?

HND Music Practice is a practical, hands-on course that develops your performance, instrumental and musicianship skills within a broad theoretical framework.

The course is designed to enhance your skills across a wide range of music practice areas, giving you the confidence and versatility to succeed in any genre of popular music. So if you’ve always fancied wowing crowds with your musical genius in a band at a famous summer music festival, or impressing audiences with your solo piece at a late-night music venue, then this course is definitely the route to take, as it will teach you the skills and concepts that are vital to success in all areas of live music practice.

The course explores a variety of topics which range from music language and band or ensemble dynamics, to instrumental skills, composing and arranging, and events management. In each module, emphasis is placed on gaining practical experience and technical expertise to allow you to gain employment in the music performance industry after study, either as a professional musician, composer or other industry professional. You will also acquire key literacy, verbal and communication skills which could then be applied to any future career you may wish to pursue.

Key Facts:

The College offers five dedicated rehearsal booths and one dedicated performance space with amplifiers, giving you ample opportunity to perfect your musical masterpieces. Outside class, you should definitely take full advantage of the thriving musical scene on offer in Northampton, which houses some key venues for experimental, alternative and indie music such as The Roadmender. Students play every Thursday evening at The Roadmender, and perform live at the Northampton School for Girls lunchtime music events every Friday, as well as at student and open mic nights in other local clubs and pubs. The College has also recently been asked to supply bands for summer events at the renowned Silverstone Racing Circuit, and is also sending student bands on a UK tour of Roland Music Academies, of which the College is an official partner. You’ll have the opportunity to express yourself musically and gain significant exposure and publicity on these circuits.

Next Steps:

The Music Practice course gives you an ideal grounding for work in the music industry, either as a professional musician, private music teacher or music therapist. Alternatively, students can opt for a career in the broader arts and entertainment environment, as arts administrators, music event managers, music journalists and music publicists, or public relations officers for major record labels.

You could apply to continue your education by a top-up year at the University of Northampton or other place of learning to gain a full degree. This gives the dual benefit of achieving both a practical and more academic qualification. You could also choose to gain further specialist music training in your particular field or genre of musicianship.

Assessment:

Assessment will be a continuous part of the course. You will be assessed in the main by projects and assignments and not by formal written examinations, although there are some time-constrained tests, in the practical areas. Assignments may involve practical work, creative work, work with technology, research- based work, written projects, verbal presentations or a combination of any of these. Some assignments may take place outside college in local music industry venues such as arts management events.

The philosophy of the teaching team is that, music practice is a subject you learn by doing. There is obviously a lot of underpinning knowledge involved in the course, which will involve research and written work, but the overall aim is to give you realistic practical tasks to do which will challenge you to develop useful practical skills.
