By taking a course in media studies, you’ll develop the necessary technical skills to begin a career in the Media, Journalism, Film, Communications or e-Media. Our range of courses is aimed at developing technical, academic and transferable skills that are relevant to the media industries. Most courses provide opportunities for you to visit television studios, radio stations and cinemas to give you a broad knowledge and understanding of how the industry operates. In addition, there’ll be talks from visiting speakers and the possibility of industrial experience. Interesting, stimulating and always popular, our media programmes provide a real start point for an exciting career. You’ll be taught by teachers with professional media experience, from radio, newspapers, magazines, television and film.

• Apple Mac G5 computers with industry standard software (including Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Shake, Maya and InDesign).

How long? One year


What do I need? You will need either:


Four GCSEs at Grade D or above including English or an appropriate Foundation Level qualification.


If you do not have a Grade C in GCSE English, you will be required to follow GCSE English as part of your studies.


What will I study?


The BTEC First Diploma offers a specialist introduction to various aspects of the media. It includes both portfolio and externally-assessed units covering a range of media studies, including:


• Introduction to media products • Audiences and industries • Research for media production • Audio production • Photography and web authoring.


Functional Skills development is also included.


What can I do next? BTEC National Extended Diploma in Media, Interactive Media or Photography and A Levels.
