IF YOU WERE ONE OF the millions of rage-harboring teens during the early 2000s, chances are you’ve pumped your fist or stomped your feet to the roaring power chords and primal screams on Thrice’s break- out album, The Artist in the Ambulance. But one thing is for sure – the Thrice of 2011 is not the Thrice that thrived at the turn of the new millennium. With age came the musical maturity that saw the band reaching far be-

yond the confines of mosh pits in underground clubs. With the band’s fifth album, Vheissu, vocalist Dustin Kensrue’s well-researched lyrics reached new depths with impressive literary and historical themes. While formerly compared to bands like Silverstein and Thursday, Thrice’s new incarnation can only be compared to icons of art-rock such as tourmates Circa Survive and Brand New. But Thrice’s members weren’t satisfied with the artistic peak they’d reached on Vheissu. In 2007, they released volumes one and two of The Alchemy Index, a collection of four elementally titled EPs (Fire, Water, Air and Earth), which collectively provided the listener with a vast array of sounds – including hardcore rock, folk and ambient electronica. But perhaps it was The Alchemy Index Vol. 4 (Earth) that best foretold what would come next for Thrice. The band’s eighth release, Beggars, saw Earth’s dirty folk roots blended with hard rock rhythms to create something new entirely. Thrice will release their latest album, Major/Minor, on Oct. 13, and will appear at The Intersection on Oct. 25. Reported by Kevin VanAntwerpen
