JOHN HIATT MIGHT NOT BE a household name, but if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the 59-year-old singer-songwriter is music royalty. The catalog of artists who have covered Hiatt’s songs – in- cluding Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, BB King, Willie Nelson and Iggy Pop – reads like a Rolling Stone 100 Greatest list. Imagine Van Gogh asking for advice on color combina- tions or Michael Jordan requesting help with his jump shot. Bottom line: when legends turn to you for help with their craft, usually you’re doing some- thing right. Despite the famous admirers, Hiatt’s career hasn’t followed a straight line to success. At age 22, Hiatt wrote the song “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here” for the rock band Three Dog Night, and the bluesy, piano-driven tune reached No. 16 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1974. Despite receiving

critical acclaim for much of his work, 13 years passed before Hiatt’s work reappeared in the Billboard charts. Over the course of a career span- ning 36 years and 20 studio albums, record labels have dropped Hiatt three times, one of which led to a bout with alcohol addiction, but none of which made the gruff-voiced guitarist hang up his six-string acoustic. By 1987, positive album reviews cor-

related with album sales, as Bring the Family began a streak of commercially successful releases for the Indianapolis-born musician. In August 2011, Hiatt released Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns – his 13th consecutive album to land on the Billboard 200. In true story-teller fashion, Hiatt fills in his live sets with impromptu stories and comedic jingles that keep even his most devoted fans guessing at what he’ll say next.
