BEST BET: Folk

GILLIAN WELCH Covenant Fine Arts Center, Grand Rapids Oct. 17, 8 p.m. $30 public, $10 with Calvin ID calvin.edu/sao, (616) 526-6064

BLUEGRASS GODDESS GILLIAN WELCH brings her unique folksy sound to Calvin College’s Covenant Fine Arts Center Oct. 17. With longtime partner David Rawlings, the two weave delicate harmonies over dual guitar picking to create a sound evocative of Americana music at its best. It must be said, nobody writes an achingly sad song quite like Gillian Welch. Summoning the storytelling ability so integral to folk

and country’s greatest songwriting talents, Welch can make you cry or bleed or dance with a turn of a phrase. Coming at the tail end of a banner year for the duo, marked with the release of The Harrow & The Harvest, a featured guest spot on the Decemberists’ The King is Dead and providing the soundtrack to the saddest funeral scene ever to hit FX’s “Justified,” Welch’s music seems poised to breakthrough to the main stream in a big way. The Calvin show offers a chance to catch Welch’s intimate, tender music in the comfortable dark of a smaller venue. Welch stands at the forefront of the alt-country wave that includes artists like Old Crow Medicine Show, Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams. It’s an autumnal music with one eye cast reverently backward toward country music’s dusty, rapidly receding glory days. It’s two voices and two guitars creating stories about unremarkable, everyday people. The result is anything but. Reported By Mallory McKnight
