UK BLACK PRIDE


Clouds parted and the sun shone down on the sixth annual UK Black Pride. Held at the end of August this year, bigger than expected crowds (over 1,300) packed in to central London’s Torrington Square –adjacent to Birkbeck College. Sponsored by Stonewall, UKBP is the biggest celebration of African, Asian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern LGBT people in Europe, and, as Executive Director Lady Phyll Opoku noted: “Today we face many challenges: increased BNP and EDL activity, and higher incidents of homophobic and racist hate crime, coupled with cuts in public services. Coping with the duality of prejudice that blights the lives of many of us is no easy feat.” Featuring sumptuous food from around the world, educational workshops, community stalls and an open-air urban dance area that featured some fabulous impromptu ‘booty shaking’, the live main stage was programmed with over eight hours of speakers, top DJs, singers, poets, drummers and performers; headliner Ms Dynamite brought the event to a close with a fantastic set of hits and new material. With near-perfect organisation and capacity crowds, UKBP was a brilliant day of celebration, diversity and tolerance, and was easily the most fun and community-spirited Pride we have attended this summer.
