TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones

The latest problem from Tiscali now appears to affect Mac users who are using the default Mac program for sending and receiving mail; macmail. It does seem to work perfectly well with other email programs such as Entourage or Thunderbird. So if this has affected you and you gave up trying to fix it, then it might

be worth a go with Thunderbird as that is free to try and use. Do you have Windows 7 and lament the loss of “show desktop”? It has not been removed as such, but in true Microsoft fashion, they have changed it. At the bottom right of the screen where the startup items are, you will see a small vertical bar. Click on this and it will have the desired effect of minimising all the windows that are open to show the desktop. When buying any new computer from the High Street retailers, do try to be wary of being “over sold” software. We had a case very recently where an individual was over- sold 2 products that either came with her new toy or were just not needed. Firstly, she was sold an office package when the “Office Starter” package could have been used, and secondly an anti-virus that was way beyond what she needed. For simple advice about these issues we are available before you commit to that purchase.

On the subject of “Office Starter” it relies on you being connected to the internet in order for it to install and that may well be fine in most cases. However, it also relies on you being connected in order to function from then on as it downloads the components necessary when it needs to. In the days of routers and broadband, it is not normally an issue, but if the connection goes down for any reason or you go travelling without the internet, then you will be deprived of using Word or Excel until the internet is re- instated. You might then wish you had bought the “full” version.

If this has happened to you, then the following applies - “Click on the Windows start button and then on Control Panel and then on the Programs item and then on Uninstall a Program and then select Microsoft Office 2010 and then click on Change and when the installer starts, click on Repair.” This will re-install the product for you and it will

then work again afterwards, but beware of how this happened in the first place and shy away from using the product without an internet connection.
