GRAND FUNDRAISING DAY United Reformed Church in Russell Steet, Tavistock on Saturday 22nd October - 9am until 4pm
In November, Mrs Mary Budge will leave the rainy, market-town of Tavistock for three months to live and help in a Salvation Army Girls Home in Behala on the outskirts of Calcutta.
The Salvation Army is an International Organisation, part of the Christian Church, working in 121 countries throughout the world. The Salvation Army Girls Home in Behala was opened by His Excellency Sir John Anderson, P.C., G.C,B., G.C.I.E., Governor of Bengal in 1935. The main objective of the home is to help the orphan, semi-orphan and poor children by providing free accommodation, food and education. The home is fully dependent on donations from friends and well wishers.
towards refurbishment at the home. The most pressing work to be carried out will be the installation of gas in the kitchen. Mary says, “ They currently use charcoal, so you can imagine that gas will revolutionise the cooking and the cleaning!”

The event is being held in the United Reformed Chuch in Russell Street, Tavistock on Saturday 22nd October from 9am until 4pm. There will be a coffee morning, ploughman’s lunch and cream teas. Stalls include home made cakes, bric-a-brac, embroidery and knitted goods. In the evening there will be a Festival Evening with the Salvation Army starting at 7pm featuring The Band, The Timbrels and Soloists. Admission is free and there will be a retiring collection.
