The amazing Boyan Ensemble of Kiev return to Tavistock to perform at St. Eustachius Parish Church on Weds 16th November at 7.30pm as part of its 20th consecutive tour of the UK. Get your tickets early as last year’s concert was a sell-out and elicited the following press headline: “There were definitely more fireworks inside than outside, when the 26-strong Boyan Ensemble of Kiev absolutely mesmerized the packed audience...with their display of virtuoso singing”. The choir has broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM and you can sample their thrilling sound by visiting the website:
www.vocalclassics.co.uk/boyan The ensemble is renowned for its magnificent sound. Awesome low notes from the basses blend seamlessly with baritone and tenor. In many of the works a single lyric
soprano soars above the smooth tones of the men, adding a unique quality that distinguishes this choir from all others. Part I of the concert consists of sacred chants of the Eastern Orthodox Church, many specially arranged for the Ensemble, which reflect the intense spiritual drama of a religion banned under the Soviet regime. The Ensemble was formed in 1984 by the late Bohdan Antkiv, People’s Artist of Ukraine. During this difficult period under Soviet rule, Maestro Antkiv and his choir were among the first to revive Ukrainian religious music and Liturgies. In Part II a striking change of mood showcases the vibrant and exciting folklore of Ukraine with a kaleidoscope of songs in many moods, including a potpourri celebrating life, love and marriage. Many of these are accompanied on
the Bayan (Accordion), Tsimbali, Pipe, and the 56-stringed Bandura – musical symbol of Ukraine. Impressive reviews have followed the Ensemble’s performances and standing ovations are the norm: “The standard of musicianship is breathtaking”
“An enriching spiritual experience”
“The most alive pianissimos, breathtakingly brilliant fortes... perfect intonation coupled with an apparently seamless legato”
“The singing... displayed perfectly balanced chords, impeccable tuning, pure melodic lines, precision of attack and beautifully shaded dynamic changes”
