Creating E-books
A two-day course in London £755+VAT
17–18 October 2011 11–12 June & 23–24 October 2012
As reading and tablet devices such as the Kindle and iPad become ubiquitous, e-book development has to be a significant part of publishers’ product offering and workflow.
What are the steps required to introduce e-book production into the publishing workflow? What are the different platforms and formats that need to be targeted? What tools are available to help editors and designers build on their existing skills?
Over the two days, you will learn about the different platforms and how appropriate they are for different kinds of content.
You will learn:
• how to create an e-book for devices that support the EPUB standard • how to convert for the Amazon Kindle •
You will gain hands-on experience on either an Apple Mac or PC, which is pre-loaded with all the latest software, including Adobe CS 5.5.
Who will benefit from this course?
Publishing staff who seek to be actively involved in the creation of e-books for mobile reading devices.
Editors who seek to understand the processes involved in the creation of e-books, so as to be able to plan workflows more effectively.
Authors who wish to become closely involved in techniques for self-publishing for portable, screen-based reading devices.
Your tutor Chris Jennings teaches at the Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies, Oxford Brookes University, as well as running his own consultancy, PagetoScreen (
www.pagetoscreen.net). He has been developing interactive products since 1992 and has provided web design and development services to a wide range of clients. Since the core of the EPUB format is HTML, his expertise in this area is proving to be useful in both teaching and consultancy.
