This course will give you a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the journals production process. Your will be equipped with all the know-how required to liaise effectively with external suppliers and in-house colleagues.

• how long things take and why • what different printing processes are used for.

Your tutor Jeremy Mills was Group Sales and Marketing Director for The Charlesworth Group and worked in strategic development consultancy roles for publishing supply companies in the UK, USA and India. In 2003 he founded his own book publishing company, Jeremy Mills Publishing, which specialises in using modern, digital technologies and internet sales for non-fiction titles. In May 2007 he became co-owner and was appointed Finance Director of Riley Dunn & Wilson Limited, and has embarked on a programme of diversification into digital short-run book printing. In addition to this position, Jeremy still fulfils the role of Publisher and Director of Jeremy Mills Publishing, which was incorporated into the Riley Dunn & Wilson Group of Companies in May 2009.

• General overview of journals production workflow • Peer review


– Online and traditional methods – Capture of author files and images – Discussion and evaluation of problems and issues


• Electronic and traditional copy-editing


– Methods: in-house, freelance and supplier based – Word and XML, metadata, electronic editorial offices, article types – Editing: structure, style, language, cross-checking, technical – References: cross-checking, bibliographic structure, linking


• Graphics handling – monochrome and colour


– File naming conventions, hard copy graphics, checking and manipulation of electronic files


– Online delivery: colour and monochrome rendering – Proofing: monochrome, colour, digital, HTML, PDF and paper


• The typesetting processes


– Word or XML and pagination (LaTeX, 3B2, Quark, Adobe InDesign, etc) – Basis for SGML/XML usage – Typefaces, type sizes and typesetting standards


• The proofing and correction cycle


– Print and online deliverables – XML validation – Typesetter checking – Delivery expectations – Validation and delivery tool – Archival mechanisms – Electronic offprints


• Journal design


– Main considerations in journal design – Subject types – Page sizes – Economy for production – Legibility – Paper types


• Preparing a journal’s typesetting specification
