The Purbeck Gazette
Police Ducking The Issue? Dear Nico,
With reference to the ‘Mean-Spirited Vandals’ letter in your September edition, I am pleased to say that I witnessed the “vandals” who removed the ducks from the Sword roundabout in Wareham.
It was about 8.00am when I saw a female police officer park her van at the entrance to the caravan park and
swiftly gather the ducks and take them away! They are probably being held in custody!
Yours faithfully, Mike Hardy
Mike - after receiving your above letter, we contacted the police with your concerns and recieved the below ‘statement’ and photographic evidence of the ducks ‘in custody’!! Ed

Dear Gazette readers,
I really hope someone will be able to help. On Saturday 3rd September, my 9 month Springer spaniel puppy was hit by a car on the road to Kimmeridge, near the quarry car park.
I was flying some kites with my daughters when the puppy jumped through the hedge row and straight into an oncoming car. The dog was in a very bad way so we picked him up and we drove like the wind to get him to a vet. In rushing off to the vets, I did not have time to wrap the kites up and put them away, I left them in the field. I did however ask a gentleman if he would pack them away and I would find some way to get them back.
The tale of the Purbeck Ducklings by Sergeant Nicholas Angel There once were 7 yellow Ducklings With bases all stubby and brown For some jolly wag had filled them with lead And driven them out of town.
All through the rush hour time on a Saxon Roundabout Sad to be seen, afraid of what others may say All through the traffic fumes on a lowly slatey stream Till a traffic cop spied them there and said to himself with glea “It’s the pound my lads for thee.”
So they went with a Quack and a waddle and a wack And a very unhappy frown. Those poor little Purbeck Ducklings could never have felt more down,
Now the carnival was over they were surely Swanage bound. Then the Mayors staff saw them there and listened to their plea For they looked…. And they saw…. And they very soon agreed You’re very fine duck race ducks indeed.
And so they all lived happily ever after in the Mayor’s typing pool Adopted by an abandoned wooden shelduck. THE END Or is it?
I did return to the field at around 9pm on Saturday evening and a family in a camper van informed me that the gentleman had packed the kites away and was heading to the Wareham vets where he obviously thought we would be. Unfortunately, Wareham vets and Swanage vets and in fact all the vets in the close area were closed and I had to drive to Parkstone in Poole!!!!
To cut a long story short, Moss (the puppy), despite the vet not holding out much hope of him making it through night, is in one piece, HOW, is a miracle to say the least. I have called all the vets in the area but as yet the 4 kites in rucksacks have not been handed in.
He seemed a really nice guy, and I am sure he is trying all he can to track us down. If you have any information please email us on samanthaliddle@

Samantha Liddle Y-Axis Thanks & Update Dear Editor, Re: – Through The Keyhole – September issue.
Whilst I was surprised to be mentioned in last month’s article, Y Axis is thrilled to be nominated as one of the Mayor’s charities this year. Especially as we hope to see this as the year of completion.
I would like to point out however that my involvement is solely with the skate park. The provision of the fabulous playground was through the efforts of Play in Swanage and we need to remember and indeed congratulate specifically Sue Bryant and Gill Dight. Thank you both for all you have done.
Please see the most recent Y Axis Newsletter situated in this magazine on page 23.
