46 Sport Swanage Sea Rowing Club regatta on the 14th where we again recorded some good results.
On Bank Holiday Monday 29th August SSRC held its regular ‘Carpenters Cup’ inter-club races, with mixed crews drawn from novices, juniors and experienced rowers racing against each other around a course in Swanage Bay. This is an excellent chance for newer members to get their first taste of taking part racing a gig, with the excitement of flying spray and buoy turns. Members joined in from the shore, urging on the crews as the pilot gigs showed skill and strength to race towards the finish line in a great show of friendly rivalry and good humour.
A
ugust and September have been a busy time for Swanage Sea Rowing Club, with a variety of events and activities for all the members. Throughout the year we offer those who would like the
opportunity to try a short row in a pilot gig at the stone quay. The Saturday morning sessions have been very busy with several gigs on the water, and locals and visitors queuing to have another go, which has increased our membership by those who get hooked on the combination of a friendly club and healthy activity.
Crews went to Port Isaac on the 13th August for a Regatta that was unfortunately cancelled due to weather, but moved on to the Lyme Regis
Wareham Cricket Club Under 13s
The row to Studland on Saturday 3rd September was a more relaxed event, with ‘Old Harry’, ‘Peveril’ and ‘Dancing Ledge’ heading out of the bay – ‘Dancing Ledge’ went on to row around Brownsea Island as a training trip whilst the others took the opportunity to moor up on the beach and take a lunch break at the pub, before joining the Ledge crew to return to Swanage. Reflecting the range of activities in the Club, over the same weekend the SSRC ladies’ crews were once again showing how good they are with excellent results at the Ladies’ championships in Newquay, the last major meeting of the season. With over 85 crews from many clubs taking part, the competition was fierce for the Swanage members, despite the training and practice they have put in, and a credit to the club that we can put in three ladies’ crews for these events. All the hard work was rewarded with the C crew finishing in 66th place, the B crew in a fantastic 34th place, beating many clubs’ A crews, and Swanage’s own A crew finishing in a superb 12th place amongst some of the very best boats in the south west.
This is a busy time and with crews from SSRC joining 350 other rowing boats in the Great River Race in London, it will be an excellent close to one of the best seasons the club has had in this, its tenth anniversary year. Find out more at
