ello again from Swanage and Wareham Hospitals!
attended an OSCARS evening in Bournemouth, when awards were given to individuals and teams
nominated by colleagues for making a significant contribution to their workplace.
There were eight categories for nominations, ranging from ‘service improvement and innovation’ to ‘Volunteer of the Year’, and we were interested in that of ‘unsung hero’ which recognises the invaluable contribution made by a person who quietly goes about their work with continuing dedication, reliability, willingness to help others and flexibility. Nearly 40 people from all over Dorset were nominated for this award, with jobs as diverse as Doctors, Personal Assistants and Domestics. We were there because Alan Rogers, the wonderful porter at Swanage Hospital, had received eight nominations and been short-listed to the final four.
It was an exciting evening, with films of all the nominees and supporting comments from their colleagues, and the results announced in true Oscar-style. They must have flipped a coin to choose the winner; all four seemed equally deserving to me and, although Alan came away with a runner up certificate rather than the trophy, he is certainly a winner as far as we are concerned.
One of the first things Alan said when he heard he had been nominated was that ‘there are many others more deserving than me’ and after such a great evening and hearing so many stories of people’s commitment to

improving the world around them, we did indeed realise that, although no more deserving than Alan, we have so many people contributing to our hospitals who are deserving of an award. We have brilliant staff and volunteers of all ages who have given years of service, keeping our gardens attractive, helping with the tea-round, proof-reading leaflets, visiting patients for a chat or to provide entertainment, making or giving items for fund-raising activities (then coming back to buy them!), meeting and greeting patients and visitors ….the list goes on. So thank you Alan, for reminding us just how many people there are who make our days better and brighter – and congratulations on being our very special ‘unsung hero’.
