Blue Devils Top Memorial in Home Opener

After winning their first two contests on the road, the Salem Blue Devils finally played their long awaited and much anticipated football home opener last Friday night. Hosting Manchester Memorial, the Blue Devils toppled the Crusaders 44-34 in a very entertaining game. A rushing touchdown gave Memorial a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and the score remained that way until early in the second when Jerickson Fedrick punched into the end zone from two yards out. Salem scored two more touchdowns in the second frame (a 69-yard pass from Jon Soldano to Ryan Decker and a 90-yard kick-off return by Fedrick), while Memorial countered with two touchdowns of their own. Salem led 22-20 at the half. The Blue Devils extended their lead right away in the third quarter thanks to a 40-yard touchdown run by Fedrick. Memorial, however, came back with a touchdown once again and Salem held a slim 30-27 advantage at the end of three.


Memorial finally took the lead again, 34-30, with just over a minute left in the game. Salem drove down to the 1-yard line and handed the ball off to Rasheed Adigun for the go-ahead touchdown, making it 38-34, and leaving 17 seconds on the clock. On the next drive, Fedrick intercepted the Memorial quarterback for a 67- yard return to the end zone, sealing the win for the Blue Devils. Salem’s Statistical leaders included Fedrick (161 rushing yards on 23 carries), Soldano (89 passing yards on 3 of 5 attempts), and Decker (83 receiving yards on two catches). Adigun also had a pick in the first quarter after the Salem defense tipped the ball in the air. Kevin Dembkoski, Abner Rodriguez, Dominic Gigante, and Evan Breen each converted on one two-point conversion following Salem touchdowns. Standing at 3-0, the Devils will host Pinkerton at homecoming this Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.


Taylor Martin: First Female Racer to win Bandolero Championship

Last year Taylor Martin, at only 13 years old, became the youngest and first ever female racer to win a championship competing in the Bandolero series at the Waterford Speedbowl. This year, while still racing in the Bandolero series, Taylor has moved in to the Legend Car series also. Taylor has been racing in both series at various racetracks this season including the NELCAR series when the Legend cars come to New Hampshire Motor Speedway at Loudon. To date, she has raced in 98 races so far this season. Taylor has participated in the Loudon races six times so far this season. Her last two races on the New Hampshire oval saw a seventh and an eighth place finish. Not bad for a 13 year old girl. Three weeks ago Taylor turned 14. She competes every Wednesday night and Saturday’s in the Bandolero and Legend series at the Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, CT, along with NHMS at Loudon and various other racetracks in the New England area. This week, Taylor’s performance on the track at New Hampshire Motor Speedway earned her an invitation to race next weekend at Loudon. Only a select few (18) racers are picked to participate in the New England Legend Car NASCAR Cup Weekend Invitational. Taylor is currently the youngest, and only female, licensed in the INEX NELCAR Legend


Car Series in the Northeast. Most of her competitors in the Legend series are much older, some even in their 50s. Taylor will be at New Hampshire Motor
