On September 17, a beautiful fall-like Saturday afternoon, Campbell High used timely, explosive individual performance to avenge last year’s pounding defeat to Claremont’s Stevens High School. Cougar running back John Houston, on just three rushes, picked up 62 of his 105 yards rushing on the day while full back Dylan Andrews was instrumental in a fourth quarter drive that led to Campbell’s thrilling, bleacher-rocking come from behind 22-18 home victory. The Cougars fell behind Stevens early, when

back two yard gains by Houston and Andrews created a third and goal at the four. With a mere 44 ticks remaining on the clock, Houston bulldozed his way across the goal line. The successful kick by Latsha gave Campbell a four point lead at 22-18. The Cougars decision to ‘squib-kick’ to Stevens

what was a game long strategy of counter plays, mis-directions and end-arounds allowed the Cardinals to score first. Quarterback Cameron Blewitt torched the Campbell secondary on a 44 yard TD strike to wide receiver Zachery Powers, just three minutes in. After Campbell gave up the ball on downs, Stevens took a 12-0 lead, when this time William Brooks Jr. at the QB position, hit Powers on a 13 yard slant. On their next possession, Campbell pulled to with a nickel on the scoreboard, highlighted by Houston’s consecutive runs of 14, 30 and 18 yards. The drive was topped off when quarterback Dan Driscoll found receiver Jesiah Wade in the front right corner of the end zone from six yards out. Matt Latsha’s successful kick cut the Cardinal’s lead to 12-7, where the score remained going into the intermission.

grabbing Cougar John Houston’s face mask, had a first and ten at the Cardinal 25 (see photo). Two plays later, QB Driscoll connected with Wade, who after the catch broke a couple of open field tackles and scooted in from 25 yards out to give the Cougars a one point lead. The two Cougars then played catch on the successful two point conversion, putting Campbell up 15-12. On their ensuing possession, Stevens put together an impressive clock eating drive. After using up nearly a six minute chunk of the third period, the nine play drive ended with Cameron Blewitt scoring on a 12 yard run on a QB keeper. Another missed extra point kept the Cougars within three points at 18- 15. With 1:02 remaining in the third, despite leading his team, the Steven’s quarterback ‘Blewitt’ when he coughed up the ball on his own 29 yard

line. Campbell linebacker Jeff Martin recovered the loose ball, giving the home team a great chance to regain the lead as the third quarter ended.

On Campbell’s second play from scrimmage,

Jesiah Wade caught a Driscoll pass and headed for pay dirt. As Wade’s second and third effort brought him inside the Cardinal’s 10 yard line, he fumbled the ball and Stevens recovered. The visitors mounted yet another impressive, clock-eating drive only to have it stall-out at mid field. The Cardinal’s punt put Campbell back at their own 25 with just under six minutes left in regulation. It was Dylan Andrews’ time to shine as his runs of three, eight and 15 yards eventually gave Campbell a first and 10 at the Steven’s 20 yard line as the clock approached the 2:00 mark. The next play saw Houston’s nine-yard gain called back on an offensive holding call. Three plays later, the talented Cougar back bounced off would-be Cardinal tacklers and headed out of bounds after picking up 10 yards to the 8 yard line, stopping the clock with 1:26 left. Back to

somewhat back fired when Donald Pellerin picked up the short kick and returned it for 21 yards to his own 46. The Cardinal’s began their final drive with :39 remaining and pushed the ball to the Campbell 40, where they used up their final time out to call the final play of the game. On fourth and ‘everything in the balance,’ Cardinal William Brooks, Jr., took the snap and dropped back to pass, but a fierce Cougar rush forced the Steven’s ‘junior’ Jr. to scramble out of the pocket. The Cardinal’s attempt to sneak out a win on the game’s final play was thwarted when Brooks was tackled on the far side line – apparently not seeing wide open teammate Cameron Blewitt doing jumping jacks in the end zone. Statistically, Stevens had better numbers than the Cougars in virtually every category except for the proverbial most important one – the score. First downs went to the Cardinals 16-10 as did yards rushing 210-69 along with total plays run from scrimmage 65-40. Dylan Andrews finished the game with 59 yards rushing on only six carries. QB Dan Driscoll was very efficient going 6-9 for 80 yards and two TDs. Jesiah Wade had four receptions for 48 yards and Jordan Lang had two key fourth quarter catches for 22 yards. To go along with the inspiring game-winning drive, was the admirable performance of the entire Red “D.” Specifically, Jeff Martin stepped up his game to the next level with seven tackles to go along with the fumble recovery, earning the praises of Coach Prindiville. Dylan Andrews added to his great all around effort by leading the Cougar defense with 13 tackles while Sean Gray recorded eight tackles while on the defensive side of the ball. Despite being on the field for most of the afternoon against the sustained Cardinal drives, the final display of the Cougar will to win was revealed in a gutsy fourth quarter defensive stand that preserved the win.

Penalties Hurt the Broncos

by Sue LaRoche A clash of two winless football squads

in Division 2 football occurred at Alvirne on Friday, September 16, and one point decided the victor. Unfortunately for the Broncos, they were on the short end of the score as they lost 7-6 in front of a large energetic crowd. The Broncos managed only eight total

yards of offense in the first quarter which saw the score locked at 0-0. At 7:34 in the second quarter, Merrimack scored on a 7- yard run and tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 lead, the only points they would need for the victory. In the waning minutes of the first half, the Broncos were marching down the field, converting on two 4th and 1 plays with quarterback keepers on both, good enough to keep the drive alive. What appeared to be a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Cohen to Tony Beaulieu was called back due to a block in the back and the Broncos drive ended unsuccessfully.

Alvirne hit an onside kick to open the second quarter and recovered the ball on the Merrimack 35 yard line setting them up nicely for their opening drive of the second half. This time, Alvirne took advantage and marched down the field finally scoring on

a 15-yard pass from Cohen to Beaulieu for a 7-6 score. Beaulieu pushed the PAT through the uprights but a penalty forced the Broncos to re-take the PAT and this time the snap was fumbled and the Broncos failed to tie the score. “This was a tough loss,” said Coach Bob Nimblett. “We had opportunities that we couldn’t convert, and we had too many first half mistakes and penalties.” The coaches made some adjustments and with some personal adjustments, the coaching staff felt that the players did a great job executing the game plan. “We expect to get better every week as our young players keep getting more experience,” explained Nimblett. A fumbled snap, lack of connection on some pass plays, and an interception resulted in the lack of scoring points in the final stanza giving the Broncos the loss moving them to 0-2 in NHIAA Division 2 football. Tony Beaulieu had what Nimblett referred to as “his best game yet,” running for 42 yards and 52 receiving yards with one touchdown. Brandon Rule added 57 yards on the ground and Kyle Manning added 27 yards. Josh Cohen ran for 15 yards including two key first down runs and

went 4 for 14 for 52 yards. Playing well on the defense were Lucas Notini, Tony Beaulieu, Britton Doyle, Ryan Bellerose and Brandon Rule.

and senior Laura Whittick led the Cougar attack. Brennen recorded seven kills, while Whittick racked up 13 service points, including one ace. Jenelle Psaledas was instrumental in setting up Campbell’s offense as she registered 20 assists. Campbell’s next game saw them taking a bus to the seacoast to take on Portsmouth Christian Academy. While they were there, the Lady Cougars handily defeated their hosts by a score of three games to one; 25- 22, 21-25, 25-14,25- 19. After splitting the opening two games, Campbell went on to take the last two games with relative ease. Jayla Brennen led the team with 11 kills and 10 service points. Sam Radcliffe,

Brianna Hardy and Meg Sweeney had five kills each. Jenelle Psledas had a big night in the helper category with 26 assists. Freshman Lauren King had 12 service points including the final six to close out the fourth and final set. On Friday night, September 16, the Cougars, in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, flushed Trinity High 3-0, winning 25-15, 25-8 and 25-13. Jayla Brennen, once again led the Cougars with a monster performance. The junior Cougar was a ‘kill-ing’ machine, recording a dozen of them to go along with her 19 service points and four aces. Jenelle Psaledas had 15 assists, and three kills. Meg Sweeney added five kills with Alex Travains and Brianna Hardy posting three kills and two blocks each. Freshman Lauren King had another fine game with eight service points and four aces. The girls improved their record to a tidy 4-0

when they defeated Franklin three games to none. Campbell wore down the Golden Tornadoes with solid 25-21, 25-14 and 25-12 wins. Jayla Brennen led the offense with eight kills. Jenelle Psaledas connected with five different hitters to register 20 assists. Alex Travains was solid at the net with six blocks to go with her three kills. Samantha Radcliffe had 18 service points, two aces, and 10 digs in a nice two-way effort. Laura Whittick and Lauren King had seven service points each to round out the Cougar scoring.
