© John Kees, Shepherd Construction “We did take some losses, inevitably, when Modus went into
administration, but rather than walk away we stayed committed to the project and developed a solution by bringing together the consortium. “Obviously we would have preferred not to have taken the
financial hit we did, but it never represented a threat to the com- pany. I would argue that the fact we were able to help fund the development recovery plan tells you something about the strength of the Shepherd Group.” Bringing Trinity Walk back to life has not been easy, but by
May 6 everyone knew it had been worth it. “The opening day was just phenomenal,” says Sargeant. “We
were originally talking about a soft opening, but it turned into a huge event, and rightly so. There was fabulous coverage on the local BBC news, as a real good news story – both for Wakefield
and the green shoots of recovery generally.” Wakefield is seen as one of the UK’s top 20 locations for busi-
ness growth. With the large format stores that were previously unavailable in Wakefield, the opening of Trinity Walk has enabled the city to rise by 42 places in the CACI Retail Footprint rank- ings, bringing it into the top 60 shopping destinations and creating hundreds of new jobs in the process. A further £240 million of other new develop- ments are under way in the city.
