IHTSDO meeting and showcase coming to Sydney in October
The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) is holding its second major meeting for 2011 in Sydney in October. IHTSDO is an international not for
profit organisation that administers the rights to the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT), the clinical terminology selected by the National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) as the preferred clinical terminology for Australia. In IHTSDO’s own words: “SNOMED
CT is considered to be the most comprehensive, multilingual clinical healthcare terminology in the world. Each year, avoidable deaths and injuries occur because of poor communication between healthcare practitioners, or because busy practitioners forget or neglect to follow their own criteria for best practices. The delivery of a standard clinical terminology for use across the world’s health information systems can therefore make a significant contribution towards improving the quality and safety of healthcare.” SNOMED CT is now freely available for
use in Australia, under NEHTA’s licensing arrangements with the International Health Terminology
Standards
Development Organisation. As SNOMED CT does not provide total coverage of all concepts and descriptions used in the Australian healthcare environment, NEHTA is tasked with supplementing SNOMED CT by developing specific extensions and derivatives to cover local clinical information requirements. The extensions and derivatives are anticipated to cover an increasing number of terminology domains over time. However, initial priorities have been defined to cover areas such as medicines, allergies, adverse reactions, pathology, diagnosis

and procedures. Ongoing priorities will be defined through stakeholder consultation and NEHTA’s assessment of benefits and capacity to support ongoing releases. The five day event will comprise a three
day meeting (10-12 October), followed by a two day showcase (13-14 October), which is focusing on implementations of SNOMED CT. The showcase will run alongside a series of educational and poster sessions. This will be IHTSDO’s first ever SNOMED CT Implementation Showcase, which will comprise an industry exhibition with a range of local and international companies. According to the organisers, the aim
of the showcase is to allow conference delegates to interact with SNOMED CT implementers from around the world and to share first-hand knowledge of the challenges, benefits, and lessons learned in SNOMED CT implementation. The target audience for the
showcase is clinicians with an interest in structured clinical data for research, quality improvement, clinical practice management and planning; clinical managers; clinical data managers; health information managers; health service managers interested in clinical and health business data futures; terminologists; clinical information system project managers; clinical information strategists; clinical system developers, vendors and commentators; and those with change and adoption interests. The event will be hosted at the
Novotel, Brighton Le Sands, Sydney, commencing on Monday, October 10 and running until Friday, October 14. Further information, including a preliminary conference schedule, is available from the IHTSDO website:
