CONNECTIONSTO THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY T

he rapidly expanding and converging realms of film, television, news, theater, literary and music publishing, sound recording, advertising and the Internet open endless possibilities for future lawyers on a global scale. To expand such opportunities for our students who aspire to practice law in these fields, Southwestern established the Donald E. Biederman Entertainment and Media Law Institute in 2000, building on a long history of involvement with the entertainment industry.

Under the auspices of the Institute, the law school offers the broadest and most in-depth curriculum in these fields of any U.S. law school taught by eight full-time professors with extensive industry experience, and a roster of adjunct faculty members that reads like a “Who’s Who” of the entertainment and media law bar. A prestigious executive board and network of alumni, who occupy important corporate and law firm positions throughout the industry, are also very involved in Institute activities and serve as mentors to our students.

Taking advantage of our location in the center of the “Entertainment Capital of the World” and the “Digital Coast,” the Institute oversees a comprehensive externship program featuring over 50 settings ranging from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to Warner Bros., an entertainment law firm practicum, specialized summer programs in Los Angeles and London and the Biederman Scholars mentoring program. In addition, it offers the nation’s first LL.M. degree in entertainment and media law both on campus and online. The Institute also sponsors a prominent speakers series; programs with the law school’s Entertainment and Sports Law Society, Intellectual Property Law Society and Media Law Forum; and annual conferences with the Entertainment and Intellectual Property Law Sections of several bar associations, local and national copyright law societies, the Media Law Resource Center and other organizations.

The Biederman Institute publishes the Journal of International Media and Entertainment Law, a joint venture with the American Bar Association’s Forums on Communications Law and the Entertainment and Sports Industries. The first of its kind, the Journal was established in 2005 to promote scholarship focused on the international and comparative law dimension in these areas, including topics related to content, regulation, intellectual property, distribution, publishing, Internet and technology, and transactions. The Journal is a semi-annual publication produced by a Board of Editors composed of Biederman Institute faculty and members of the Forum committees. Students are selected to work with the Board on research, technical editing and other tasks.

Through all of these efforts, Southwestern has earned a reputation as a key law school for students interested in entertainment and media law.< Note: See page 33 for a listing of Southwestern’s entertainment and media law courses.
