OPPORTUNITIES R

IN THE AND CHOICES CLASSROOM

ecognized by the Carnegie Foundation for leading law school curricular innovation, Southwestern's curriculum incorporates – and goes beyond – best practices at law

schools around the country. More than just assembling a rich and dynamic roster of courses, Southwestern:

■ provides students with more time to master the course materials

■ places greater emphasis on the realities of legal practice, the construction of legal careers, and the ethical and social responsibilities of lawyers

■ has significantly expanded the instruction of legal research and writing to encompass more lawyering skills as well as earlier exposure to litigation, negotiation, interviewing and counseling skills

■ facilitates students' ability to study specialized topics in the first year

■ provides a full menu of academic support programs designed to help students improve their learning skills and get the most out of their law school experience

Choices abound in Southwestern’s cutting-edge first-year curriculum.* Through our groundbreaking three-track approach to the Legal Analysis, Writing and Skills (LAWS) course, first-year students choose from among three areas of focus – Appellate Advocacy, Negotiation or Trial Practice. Students are also encouraged to explore a specific area of law as early as their second semester through an elective such as Copyright, Constitutional Criminal Procedure or International Law, thereby getting a head start in determining a field of law that they might wish to pursue. The required traditional curriculum includes 17 courses (see charts, pages 8-9 and 32).

As they progress through their studies, our students can choose to follow either a broad- based or a more focused personalized curriculum from a comprehensive selection of more than 250 courses and seminars. Southwestern is widely recognized for its offerings in entertainment and media law, international law, criminal law and trial advocacy. In recent years, the faculty have also developed a particularly rich collection of courses in alternative dispute resolution, business enterprise, public interest and civil rights, and environmental law, among other areas (see listings, pages 34-37).

A unique Certificate in Law and Public Policy, an innovative January Intersession, a Hawaii-Winter Intersession, advanced Capstone courses and a floating “Mini-term” further expand opportunities beyond the traditional semesters for students to take exciting new electives taught by legal experts from around the world.<
