WOOLSAFE NEWS SPRING/SUMMER 2011
UN DER The magnifying glass
By Dr. Eric Brown
What caused this line to appear across this nylon cut pile carpet?
T e WoolSafe Registered Inspectors get to see some very unusual things at times. T is cut pile nylon tufted carpet (Yes, WoolSafe Inspectors deal with all types of
fl oor covering and even upholstery) had developed a line of missing pile. It was not noticed until the furniture was moved to reveal this line nearly a metre in length and about 5 millimetres wide.
T e pile was simply not there. What has eaten this nylon fi bre? It was certainly not carpet beetle or case making moth as these tend to target the protein in wool. Nylon is just not tasty.
