September 16, 2011 - 15 Salem Patriot Salem Patriot Salem’s Jordan Bowman weaves his way through a group of Londonderry defenders

by Chris White The Salem boys’ soccer team earned its first win of the 2011 season at home against Dover back on Tuesday, August 30. The Blue Devils took a hard-fought

victory by the score of 2-1 that day. After a scoreless first half, and most of the second, Dover scored from a counter attack to take a 1-0 advantage. However, Salem’s Tyler Donahue

blasted a shot to the back of the net 45 seconds later and tied the game at 1-1. Three minutes before the end of the regulation, Salem freshman Todd Righini beat his defender down the right wing channel and sent a cross that found the head of junior Matt Sanchez. Sanchez headed the ball past the Dover goalkeeper to put the Blue Devils up one goal as they went on to the victory.

After the win against Dover, the Devils hit a rough patch in the schedule, losing to a few talented teams. The Devils suffered losses to Winnacunnet (4-0), Manchester Central (5-0), and Londonderry (5-0). Salem goalkeeper Andrew Zani recorded seven saves against Winnacunnet. Salem would get back on track at home against Concord, though. After falling behind 1-0, the Blue Devils tied the game on a goal by Sanchez from Righini. From there, the teams played until the end of regulation plus an extra 20 minutes in which no one scored. Zani had a big game for Salem in goal with 10 saves. “I was really impressed with how

the boys played down the stretch,” Salem coach Tony Karibian said. “They stayed focused and kept fighting to
