MEET YOUR 2010 CHAMPION John Cook was hearing a voice in his head as the final round of the hotly contested 2010 Charles Schwab Championship took place. John has all of his faculties: He was just hearing the voice of his mentor, Ken Venturi, who grew up playing Harding Park. “I heard him all day long,” said Cook. “ ‘Just play

like I’m standing beside you,’ he would say.” Venturi’s presence helped Cook to a final-round

67 and his second consecutive Charles Schwab Cup Championship. He won the 2009 title at Sonoma Golf Club. In 2010, he was battling a Northern Californian Michael Allen. So, it was a Southern Cal (Cook) vs. Northern Cal battle at TPC Harding Park. The two came to the par-4 18th hole with

Frys.com Open, held Oct. 14-17 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin; and The Presidents Cup 2009. “Harding Park truly is one of the country’s great

municipal golf facilities and has been a terrific host site for the 2005 World Golf Championships- American Express Championship, The Presidents Cup and now the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. We look forward to a wonderful long-term partnership with the City of San Francisco at TPC Harding Park,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. The original Sam Whiting and Willie Watson-

designed championship course at Harding Park opened in 1925 and began hosting amateur tournaments soon after—most prominently the San Francisco City Championship and the United States Golf Association’s National Public Links Championships in 1937 and 1956. Harding Park’s legacy for hosting professional tournaments began with the 1944 Victory Open, won by the likes of Byron Nelson and Jimmy Demaret. Professional golf continued with the Lucky International Open in the 1960s, an event whose champions included World Golf Hall of Fame members Gary Player, Gene Littler, Jackie Burke, Jr., Chi Chi Rodriguez, and San Francisco’s own Ken Venturi.

Cook holding a two-stroke lead. Allen had the advantage after two shots as he hit the green and Cook missed. But after pitching to within 14 feet, Cook made par to secure the win, the fifth of his career. Cook, who turns 54 in October, has won 11

times on the PGA TOUR, the first at age 23. He was born in Ohio but grew up in Southern California and was persuaded by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf to attend Ohio State. ■
