am Snead and The Greenbrier Resort are interlocked in golf history as preeminent figures in the game—Snead as a World
Golf Hall of Fame member and The Greenbrier as one of the game’s cherished resorts and golf facilities and a National Historic Landmark. Snead, a native of nearby Hot Springs, VA, was associated with The Greenbrier for more than 60 years before his death at age 89 in 2002. He began as an assistant golf professional in 1936, started what is now called the Sam Snead Festival tournament in 1948, was the Pro Emeritus at the club late in his life and made his 35th and final career hole-in-one at age 82 on the fly on the 18th hole at The Old White TPC Course. The Old White became part of TPC Network in March 2011.
Course, designed by C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor. Old White became a part of the TPC Network in March 2011 and was the site in the summer of 2010 for Stuart Appleby’s final-round 59 to win the inaugural Greenbrier Classic. Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier, says the affiliation with the PGA TOUR has made quite an impact on the community. “It’s really, really important... we were about
to lose 1,100 of our 1,800 jobs and that would have been devastating to the area. And now we’ve got 850 employees here, we’ve got 300 jobs posted, and everything’s back going. It was tough in the beginning, but we got it turned and it’s really rolling in the right way.”
A MEMORABLE HISTORY The Greenbrier Course was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in preparation for the 1979 Ryder Cup. The Meadows Course, a Dick Wilson and Bob Cupp design, and the private Snead Course, a
