Moginie James... at home | Autumn 2011
Resident bookworm Susanna T omas introduces us to a selection of her favourite reads!
’m a little bit sad that Waterloo Gardens Tearoom has been featured in this issue. Why? Because it’s already hard enough to get a seat in this wonderful tearoom and we don’t want to lose our weekly spot in the window, drinking Golden Needle tea and having cake – at ten in the morning! How indulgent is that?

If you fancy taking up the gentle ar t of afternoon tea a good star ting point is The Ritz London Book of Afternoon Tea by Helen Simpson. With afternoon tea at The Ritz starting at £40 per person, this read offers a rather cheaper alternative by preparing your own using their lovely recipes (if you’re no baking aficionado, then just read all about the fascinating history of our national institution).
Halloween is on it’s way so if you want to get your teeth into something more sinister, see what the fuss is all about with Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels which are now serialised on TV. More adult than the Twilight trilogy, these vampire tales have proved a monster hit (did I hear you groan then?).
Or, whilst hiding from the trick or treaters, why not scare yourself with this selection of short, spooky stories from a number of popular authors? I’m going to go the whole hog this Halloween – I’ll put on an indulgent face pack whilst reading it and if the door bell rings, I’ll just answer it as I am! (Scary...!)
Another rather frightening prospect this Autumn is when the little ones star t school for the first time, but fear not, there are plenty of books to encourage them on their first day. Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is not a new book but it’s a hit with parents and children alike, and Janet’s illustrations are absolutely lovely (just think of ‘The Jolly Postman’). Both this book, and I am too absolutely small for school by Charlie and Lola author, Lauren Child, are both written to be enjoyed as well as to educate.
So, whether you are soothing the children’s nerves or scaring yourself silly with a horror read, have a happy reading time – and don’t forget the tea and cake.
Happy reading! Susanna x
