Spoon Challenges 43

This was just the inspiration needed to help the teams put their best feet forward on this wonderful challenge event. Well done to all the participants, climbers and the resourceful and committed drivers. There was great camaraderie on the mountains among the teams and for many, the fundraising target was as much of a challenge as the blisters, aches and strains that were defiantly endured while achieving their personal and team goals. An event of this size takes substantial resources and support to ensure it runs smoothly and successfully. Thanks go to everyone who collectively delivered yet another great Spoon Challenge event.

This year’s FordRanger Great Lakeland Challenge takes place just as this edition of Spoonews is landing on your doorstep. 20 teams are embarking on the longest, steepest, highest challenge in mid September with the hope of successfully completing what is recognised as one of the toughest team tri-challenges in the country. This is more than a relay, it is an event

that requires each of the three team members to be able to contribute in all the disciplines, kayaking, cycling and mountain walking making this event not for the fainthearted! It is for anyone who wants to set themselves a challenge, to work as a team to achieve a common goal, to test themselves physically and mentally and to ultimately be rewarded with the prize of success.

The End2End took place at the end of August. The 874 mile bike ride has certainly captured the imagination of Spoon supporters and 37 individuals set out from John O’Groats to travel the length of Britain with the aim of reaching their friends and family at Lands End only seven and a half days later. Spoon provides accommodation and a support team en route that includes physio, bike mechanics and a well stocked first aid kit and cool box. This is a special event delivering a special bond among the participants – a unique challenge of endurance.

By the end of the year it is hoped that the funds pledged from these four Spoon challenge events will exceed £410,000 thanks to the enthusiastic fundraising from over 200 generous individuals who gave up their time to complete their own personal challenge as well as a Spoon challenge.
