The black sheep firkin challenge The inaugural ‘Firkin Challenge’ took place on 21st May with seven teams entered and five finishers. Such was the challenge of the picturesque 82 mile route between old Hartley’s Brewery in Ulverston to Black Sheep Brewery in Masham. Only the hardy boys of the Black Sheep Brewery team towed a firkin of ale from Cumbria to NorthYorkshire. “Like cycling with the brake on” said BSB Sales Manager Allan Russell. Well done guys! WEST MIDLANDS Golf Day with a real Focus The West Midlands regional golf day took place on 10th June for the third year in succession at Ladbrook Park Golf Club, Earlswood. On a day of glorious sunshine, 16 teams competed for the opportunity to represent the region at the Oxfordshire in October. Teams included Spoon’s great supporters TNT and it was good to chat over Spoon’s support for our communities with recently retired Tom Bell. On arrival at the 19th hole, everyone enjoyed a superb barbeque, raffle and prize giving. The day resulted in around £5,000 raised and proceeds will go towards our latest project, a refurbishment to enable 15 school leavers with sight impairment to receive help from Focus Birmingham. Focus entered two teams and one led by the Chair of Trustees excelled by playing the most golf to win the coveted wooden spoon and the famous Spoon striped anorak. Honorary President David Duckham was on hand to

present the team prizes with Steve King’s Pertemps People Development Group team producing the score of the day to be crowned overall winners.

WORCESTER Warriors supporters show support for Wooden Spoon Worcester Warriors Official Supporter Club presented its fundraising proceeds in April to its two chosen charities, Wooden Spoon and Worcester Warriors Academy. Each charity received half of the £500 which the Official Supporters Club, led by Tracey and Darren Birch, has raised through events and raffles on away coaches.

Dentdale and Wensleydale proved to be challenging with some dramatic climbs. Average time for the route was approximately eight hours but this figure was somewhat slewed by the ‘Fat Boys Ride Again’ who sashayed into one of the sponsor’s pubs for some liquid refreshment. Becoming engrossed in the Heineken Cup Final, attempts to make up for lost time proved futile as the 90 minute break fuelled by a few pints of the sponsor’s best ale proved beyond them! The teams raised £5,000 and were treated to a barbeque at the BSB where Paul Theakston presented the prizes. Finally, grateful thanks to Paul, Jo & Rob Theakston, John Little and Bruce Allison.
