1873 The first practical typewriter was sold to customers. 1938 In a speech, Adolf Hitler demanded self-determination for the Sudeten Germans in Czechoslovakia. 1940 The Lascaux paintings were discovered in France. The cave paintings were 17,000 years old and were some of the best examples of art from the Paleolithic period. 1943 During World War II, Benito Mussolini was taken by German paratroopers from the Italian government that was holding him. 1944 US Army troops entered Germany, near Trier, for the first time during World War II. 1953 US Senator John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Lee Bouvier. 1953 Nikita Krushchev was elected as the first secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. 1974 Violence occurred on the opening day of classes in Boston, MA, due opposition to court- ordered school “busing.” 1974 Emperor Haile Selassie was taken out of power by Ethiopia’s military after ruling for 58 years. 1977 South African anti-apartheid activist Stephen Biko died at the age of 30. Lookout The The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Crows Nest Monday, September 12, 2011
Where have all our members gone?
We have a new Rotarian! Swapna Prasad was inducted into the Rotary Club of Crows Nest, with her father, Suresh (a Rotarian of many years) and mother, Sheila, present at Monday night’s meeting. And proudly it was my first induction as President! Welcome Swapna. Giving Night: A night that is very important
to all Rotary clubs, one of our major events of the Rotary year. Last Monday night was that night and it was an inspiring night as Immediate Past President Bruce and PP Mark had the great pleasure of, in Bruce’s words “not wasting an audience”, in presenting cheques to a number of organisations that they decided to support from Bruce’s Presidential year. Representatives from the organisations that
were recipients of the Giving night spoke to us on what they did, from operations on children with cleft palates in the Philippines, to Technical Aid for the Disabled here in Sydney. The organisations all sent representatives to talk to us. It was an inspiring meeting. It is why we all work so hard Laura, our Rotary Exchange student brought
three of her friends along, we had eight Rotarian partners and nine guests. A meeting of 34 people. But only 15 Rotary Club of Crows Nest Rotarians turning up. WHY? One of the most important and rewarding
meetings of our year and only 15 Rotarians attend? More guests than Rotarians . . . What is wrong? I realise that some have prior commitments
(this event has been on the Rotary calendar for three months) or members are overseas, but others? We have 38 members, most financial, and we can get only 15, or 31 per cent to turn up for the Giving Night? I, and the board, note that we seem to be averaging only 18 Rotarians attending any meeting, lunch or evening. And they are the same 18 nearly every time. What is the problem? Is it the format of the club meetings? Tell me what you would like changed. Are the Guest speakers we have

with President Warren Bolton
not what you want? We have some excellent speakers over the next few weeks, but it is embarrassing when they come to us and only 16 to 18 people turn up to hear them. I have suggested and organised a social theatre outing but only 17 people out of the required 30 wish to attend. I was keen to arrange a Dinner dance, but I hear and see, very little support, so I am not going to push it. Do we wish to have more social events than just club meetings? What social functions do you suggest? Have a good think about this and send me an email as a response please. I am prepared to act on ideas, as long as I have a majority support. So let’s all get along to a Rotary meeting at
least once a month. Note the evening meetings dates on the back page of the Bulletin. Club projects are happening and I will talk to this soon with the action plan.
