Swift Current house fire Sept. 6 caused by a candle

PRAIRIE POST — ppost@prairiepost.com

There were no injuries as a result of an early morning single story house fire on 7th Ave. N.E. in Swift Current Sept. 6. At 1:15 a.m. Swift Current Fire Department along with officials

from the City RCMP, ambulance, City Light and Power and Sask Energy were called to the home. Once they arrived on scene, there were flames escaping the window and onto the roof. Firefighters quickly had the blaze contained. The cause of the fire was determined to have started from a candle left burning on the deck after an evening barbecue. The candle ignited the deck and fire spread to the area near the

propane-powered barbecue. The relief valve ruptured on the tank releasing the propane

which acted like a blow torch against the house. It spread the fire up the walls and into the house. The batteries were removed from the smoke detectors in the home. The family awoke to the smell of smoke in the home and fortunately were able to escape. Fire department officials caution when using candles or any type of open flame, to ensure they are constantly monitored and all fires are extinguished prior to retiring at night. The candles coupled with the lack of working smoke detectors put the family at risk. Smoke detectors should be tested monthly.
