About the Author


Ros Ormiston is an independent art historian. She is a lecturer and author with a wide range of interests in art, architecture and design history. Since 2002, she has been a visiting lecturer at Kingston University, London, teaching art and architectural history. Her published books include Alphonse Mucha: Masterworks; William Morris: Artist, Craftsman, Pioneer; and in this series, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci.

The renowned Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn was born in the 17th century at a time known as the Golden Age of Dutch Art. This richly illustrated volume explores Rembrandt’s early life in The Netherlands, his friends and family and his education and relationships. From his birth in 1606, it details the progression of his prodigious talent, his mastery of chiaroscuro and his amazing artistic skill. The volume also presents a beautiful gallery with a huge range of portraits, landscapes, drawings and etchings showing their context in the artist’s life and body of work, and including several large, dramatic canvases in the elaborate Baroque style.
