Other operators adapt their online marketing activities to openly rebrand their website with Spanish flavoured names to accommodate the cultural environment like Sportingbet (Miapuesta), Victor Chandler (Betvictor), Ladbrokes (LBapuestas) and Interwetten (Interapuestas) when accessed from a Spanish IP. Of about 40 online betting houses that take bets from Spain, the first five control 86 per cent of the market, namely Miapuesta (Sportingbet), bwin, Betfair, Bet365 and Unibet, according to online analysts.”


In 2010, SportingBet (Miapuesta) reported that it earned just below 13 per cent of its revenues from the Spanish market (a total of €6.5m).


It is worth noting that major Spanish operators, Codere and Cirsca are widespread in Spanish-speaking Latin America and will likely expand their services online to target those markets once they obtain a Spanish licence.

and bwin claiming that the sponsorship deal was in breach of the country’s competition law. The case is still ongoing, but should bwin be found to have fallen foul of regulations the operator may be prevented from applying for an online licence.


Concrete online gambling data figures are difficult to come by due to the current lack of official oversight and a massive grey market. GamblingData estimates the Spanish grey market may be worth between €210m and €250m in net gaming revenue.


In 2010 the unregulated online market is estimated to have generated €3bn in turnover and according to the AEDAPI online consumers generated €315m profit for operators, 19 per cent higher than the previous year. Sports betting remains the single most popular online gambling activity generating over one third of the profit (€110 million) –


predictably, football is by far the most popular sport to bet on at 70 per cent of all sports bets. Casino, skill games, bingo and the lottery generated €120 million. Poker generated €85 million, an increase of 13 per cent on the previous year.

Late last year, the government announced the sale of 30 per cent of its stake in LAE to raise funds. When it goes ahead in October / November of this year it will be the largest initial public offering (IPO) in Spain and is expected to generate between €6.5 and €7.5 billion. Greece has also announced similar privatisation measures.
