Meanwhile the ongoing saga with Betfair Italia looks like it will come to an end. The AAMS challenged the company which holds an Italian remote gaming licence and through which it runs its website betfair.it.

This is the first such dispute brought against a primary operator by the AAMS and is likely to push operators to abide by the new Italian rules on licensing.


spoRts BettinG Although the first product online was horse race betting (since June 2001) the next to follow was fixed odds sports betting which was launched in June 2002. The sector saw revenues of just over €1bn in 2008, which was 72 per cent of the market. Revenues grew to


€1.2bn by 2009 even though its market share dropped to 33 per cent as the interest in poker tournaments grew rapidly. By 2010 it saw €1.3bn in revenues and a 28 per cent market share.

The total market value for the skill games in 2008 was €242m which was 16 per cent of the market. This grew to €2.3bn by 2009 a 62 per cent market share, overtaking the sports betting sector. By 2010 the market value reached €3.1bn and 65 per cent of the market.


The AAMS stipulates that poker networks must include Italian players only and they cannot be linked to international poker networks.


The main online poker networks includes People’s (operated by Mircrogame) which has a 28 per cent market share and saw total revenues in 2010 of €892m; Ongame (Bwin) with a 15 per cent share and total revenues of €487m, Playtech (Betclic, Cogetech, Eurobet, Sisal, Snai) with a 14 per cent and €461m revenues, ItalyPoker (LSP) with three per cent and €114m and Partypoker (Partygaming and Intralot) with €74m revenues and a two per cent market share.
