by Marc Ayotte The Campbell High football squad opened up the 2011 campaign on September 3, against last year’s Division V state semi-finalist, St. Thomas Aquinas. On a scorching Saturday afternoon, an experienced home town Saints team came marching into Cowell Stadium on the campus of the University of New Hampshire and handed the youthful Cougars a 45-20 opening day loss. According to CHS head football coach Marc Prindiville; “this year’s meeting was a huge improvement over last year,” when the Cougars were shutout by St. Thomas. Prindiville, also mentioned the impact that a short and young roster can have on the outcome of a game. His predicament, like so many other smaller schools who do not have the numbers on the depth chart, is that his team gets worn down by the number and size of the players that larger enrollment schools are blessed with – a scenario that appears to be inherent and more prevalent in high school football programs. The Cougars had an auspicious start to the game when the Saints, on the old vaunted Statue of Liberty play, torched the visitor’s secondary on the very first play of the game. With a great first half rushing performance by John Houston (64 yards on nine carries), Campbell was able to keep the game close. Trailing by only eight points, CHS was able to pull to within two points at 14-

Saints March Over Campbell in Football Opener

12, when quarterback Dan Driscoll rolled out of the pocket to his right and hooked up with wide receiver Brendon O’Brien on a 35 yard touchdown pass. However, the Saints’ star running back, Ryan Monette took the ensuing kickoff 93 yards to pay dirt, for a 21-12 lead. Monette proved to be a one man wrecking crew, rushing for ninety yards, while scoring four touchdowns on the day. Despite yielding another TD and trailing 29-12 going into the intermission, Prindiville maintained; “We played pretty well in the first half.” And if not for two very long scoring plays, the score at half time would have been more indicative of the Campbell coach’s assessment. The Cougars never mounted a second half threat, running out of gas and going down to defeat against a team which Prindiville says is a very well coached team, adding; “I would be surprised if they don’t go undefeated (on the season).” Despite being outplayed by St. Thomas, Campbell was able to muster up 298 yards of total offense. Quarterback Dan Driscoll threw for 107 yards, including two TD passes. Sophomore wide receiver Jesiah Wade had a thrilling 66 yard kickoff return to go along with a touchdown reception. Tailback Jordan Lang rushed for the other Campbell score.

Campbell’s next game will take place on

Saturday, September 10, at 1:30, when they host Fall Mountain in their home opener.
