THE KINDNESS OF ELEPHANTS
From the animal world . . . A University of Cambridge study recently detailed how Asian Elephants display acts of kindness and caring, lending further support to the belief that these huge creatures have complex emotional and cognitive lives.
The study of elephant cooperation took place in Thailand and showed that Asian elephants can understand when they need help, and are willing to pitch in and come to another pachyderm’s aid. Researchers devised various tests in which the elephants could not complete a task alone, and invariably they quickly learned to work together, even to the point where a solitary elephant would wait for another one to appear and come over to help, showing what appears to be forethought, patience, and restraint. Researchers say this study reveals that elephants have “impressive cognitive abilities,” so much so that they join a rather exclusive club of “social cooperators,” which to date is comprised only of human, chimps, hyenas, and rooks.
