A RIGHT ROYAL TRIBUTE

6 Million oak trees to be planted in commemoration of the queen’s 60th year on the throne

To commemorate the Queen’s 60th year on the throne, the government has announced that the Official Jubilee Weekend shall be held on 2-5 June 2012 *(1); an event guaranteed to be filled with royal festivities. In addition to the romp and pomp that we so enjoy, some members of the Royal Family have nobly used this occasion as a platform to propel a project to replenish our woodlands and transform our landscape on a monumental scale.

Princess Anne in tandem with the Woodlands Trust has initiated the Jubilee Woods Project. The royal estate promises to provide community groups and schools across the U.K with oak saplings to encourage them to grow their very own acre of copse. The bold project plans for 60 woodlands at 60 acres, each representing a year of the Queens reign, the jewel in the crown being a flagship wood of 500 acres.

To launch the initiative, the Princess Royal planted a tree and www.choicepointmagazine.com

placed a personal letter of support in a specially designed Jubilee Woods time capsule.

The first Diamond Wood has been set up in Whitehead, in the county of Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Patrick Cregg, director of the Trust in Northern Ireland, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the Jubilee, while creating valuable habitats for our precious wildlife.” He continued: “We can only make this exciting and ambitious project happen with everyone’s help; and we really hope that local people - individuals, organisations and businesses – will be inspired to take part and create a lasting woodland legacy.” *(2)

The Woodland Trust is now looking for landowners to plant a Diamond or Jubilee Wood on their own land, with tree planting taking place from autumn 2011 until the close of 2012. The Trust will offer tree planting advice and, in some cases, funding to landowners, while also providing thousands of free Jubilee tree packs to communities and schools across the UK.

The Trust now offers a range of activities to inspire, support and enable organisations, schools, community groups and individuals to plant trees. To find out how you can participate visit http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
