GET UP AND GET HEALTHY!
At the online NPR (National Public Radio) site, reporter Peggy Neighmond discusses the sad fact of the modern world—that so many of us are sedentary. Sitting so much—at our computers, in front of the TV, in our cars—has health consequences. For example, a sedentary lifestyle has been shown to increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels, contribute to poor cardiovascular health and cause weight gain. Even if you work out at the gym after work, that workout may not make up for the long-term effects of sitting so much during the day.
So what do you have to do to improve your health? Not much actually! That’s right, if you are tied to your desk, it doesn’t take much effort to actually make a big difference in your health. Researchers say that getting up and moving your large muscles for a few minutes each hour can go a long way to reducing the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Not moving
your large muscles for long periods of time can cause your metabolism to slow, so the key to move for a few minutes every hour or so throughout the day, not just in one sweaty hour at the gym after work.
Stretch out your legs under your desk and scissor them or bounce them up and down (but protect your knees by not locking them). Or stretch your legs and pump your feet like you were stomping on the gas pedal for a few minutes. Stretch out your arms and pump them over your head. Get up from your chair and do one minute of deep knee bends and one minute of side leg kicks. As Neighmond reports, “It may not sound like much, but an Australian study found that these types of mini-breaks, just one minute long throughout the day, can actually make a difference. You can simply stand up, dance about, wiggle around, take a few steps back and forth, march in place. These simple movements can help lower blood sugar, triglycerides, cholesterol and waist size.”
