Our very own Devon Underhill talks to Lotus Lampshades Lisa Wrigley as they complete some extremely high profile projects……

Devon Underhill: How did Lotus Lampshades come about? Lisa Wrigley: It began in the 1950’s, when my mother asked in a shop if they sold lampshades, and the shopkeeper replied “No. Why, do you make them?”. She said yes, and had to find out how to make them as she left with an order! The businesses main clients became large department stores including Kendal’s, Browns and Harrods. In 1984 I took over the business, and it became Lotus Lampshades. We then acquired the 18th Century Stone Chapel in North Wales, where the lampshades are made.

DU: How has the company changed over the years? LW: The most significant change was the impact of Chinese imports, which caused widespread closures because lampshade manufacturers couldn’t compete with the

prices. We decided to specialise in our bespoke decorative range, as the imports seemed to be large quantities of the same product in plain styles.

DU: What has been your most challenging project and how did you overcome the obstacles it presented? LW: We have had a couple of challenging projects recently, the most being creating ‘Rule Britannia’ shades for a BAFTA dinner in Los Angeles that the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge attended. Another one of our successful projects was producing the lampshades for Adele’s world tour and we are also making the lampshades for Adele’s forthcoming UK tour.

DU: How has the global economic crisis affected Lotus Lampshades, if at all? LW: This year has been our busiest, so we

haven’t felt the full force of the economic crisis, but you can never rest on your laurels so we continue to seek new clients with hopefully more exciting projects in the pipeline.

DU: What does the future hold for Lotus Lampshades? LW: We took a stand this year for the first time at the Interior Show 2011 at the NEC in Birmingham, and received overwhelming interest. We have broadened our customer base and are considering doing it again in 2012. Our USP is that our shades are hand made in our workshop in the UK and this is what people seem to want.
