Dancers ready to shine T

he chance of appearing on mainstream television will be a major incentive when 55 Richmond High School dancers take part in this month’s

annual Rock Eisteddfod. Te competition combines dance and theatre

production as schools compete for the right to have their performance televised. Tis year’s Rock Eisteddfod will be held on September 8 and Richmond High dance coordinator Jodie Hussin hopes the hard work will reap rewards. “Te theme this year is addiction, so we are looking at

three types of addiction-drugs and alcohol, relationships and body image,” Miss Hussin said. “We started in term four last year, so it’s almost a year of work. “Te kids love it, we do Sunday rehearsals so it’s a lot of

work but they enjoy it.” Richmond High School has been placed in the

open division against 12 other schools from Sydney. While the premise of the competition is based on dance choreography, costumes and props are often the standouts and can determine a school’s final place. “Backstage have four minutes before and after the

dance to get the props off,” Miss Hussin added. “If you go over time you lose a ranking spot…you only

get one shot at it so if you make a mistake, that’s it. “You have to raise all the funds yourself and it can cost

up to $20,000 to get this all started.” Richmond High last took part in the Rock Eisteddfod

two years ago, narrowly missing out on reaching the national stage. Tis year they are hoping to prove themselves as contenders and use the dance to convey the important message of addiction. “All the different scenes have a different song that

relates to the theme so that is important. “We were one spot out of nationals last time so we are

hoping to get into the top five this year.” If Richmond High is successful at the regional

competition, their dance will be shown on channel nine in November and judged against some of the best schools in Australia. For more information on the Australian Rock Eisteddfod, visit www.rockchallenge.com.au.
