Seniors embrace diversity

the Hawkesbury making sure that people from all backgrounds feel comfortable in their community. Staff at Hawkesbury Seniors

A

Leisure and Learning Centre are helping residents from an array of cultures share experiences with one another through a monthly lunch group. After working at the centre

for four years, Julie Joyce has seen interest in the group grow throughout the year and believes initiatives like this are important for the Hawkesbury senior community. “It was just something we decided to

put in because the multicultural group was really big here and it sort of died down,” she said. “We are trying to get it back up now

and it’s just taken off.” Members of the Macedonian

community were on hand to take part in the August lunch and were joined by a large group of seniors who use the group to interact with one another. As many of the seniors scarcely have

transport options available to them, the centre supplies a bus to avoid isolation for residents. After 28 years of operation, the

multicultural aspect is an important role at the Hawkesbury centre and Julie says that it provides an interaction that simply

cannot exist from home. “Being with people of their own age

makes such a difference so we are trying to get them out a lot more,” Mrs Joyce added. “We wouldn’t have this country

without them so it’s about giving something back to them.” But while every third Tursday

of the month is dedicated mainly to multicultural groups, seniors are offered the opportunity for interaction every day of the week. Te centre also holds movie days, exercise classes and computer lessons in a much more comfortable environment. Julie’s next project is to introduce

a group for seniors with MS and Parkinson’s disease, providing unique support for sufferers. For more information on the
