58 September 3 - 16, 2011 Artists show mix in influences

“Mixing It Up: Building an Identity” is an exhibition that celebrates and examines how works created by Mexican American artists are influenced by the cultures of both Mexico and the United States. It runs Sept. 17 through Jan. 28, 2012 at the Tempe Center for the Arts Gallery, 700 W. Rio Salado Pkwy. in Tempe. The core of the exhibition, according to curator Michelle Dock, features examples of Mexican American art from the collection of the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University.

“These works address themes about personal identity: national identity, family and community and labor and border issues,” she notes. “The artists have an interesting way of ‘mixing up’ these themes to reflect their own identities. Some of the artists embrace cultural duality, some share more kinship to one culture and others struggle with balancing all of these ideas. Whatever their message, their art articulates experiences, impressions and issues in ways that words cannot express.” Area artists include Tony Olvera of Tempe; Manuel R. Burruel of Glendale; Moníca Aíssa Martínez, Martín Moreno and Frank Ybarra all of Phoenix and Larry Yáñez of Yuma, plus numerous California, Texas, New Mexico and Mexico artists. The exhibition is presented by the Gallery at TCA, Friends of TCA and Cortez Coffee. The Tempe History Museum and the Jules Heller Print Study at the ASU Art Museum contributed to this exhibition.

The exhibition provides free online curriculum units for elementary and secondary teachers and a Paper Cup Exchange featuring artist talks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thu., Oct. 13.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. For more, visit www.tempe.gov/tca/gallery/ exhibitions.htm.
