Kitchen, being among the first churches in the greater Nashua area to be part of the visioning, planning and opening of the Anne Marie House on the grounds of Presentation of Mary Academy (PMA, and partnering with the St. Vincent De Paul Society. Leona Shanholtz, St. Vincent de Paul Society, said, “The food pantry could not have grown and expanded our service to the poor without Father Gary’s guidance, leadership and support. St. Kathryn’s active partnership has made it possible to: expand the Christmas Family Adoption Program, provide greater financial support for medicine, fuel and utilities; increase and improve the food pantry facilities; inspire many St. Kathryn parishioners to volunteer on a regular basis; initiate new programs such as the coupon program; most importantly provide the St. Vincent De Paul members with the knowledge that Father Gary was there with advice and support whenever needed. He always had time for us and gave us the encouragement to continue the Lord’s work in feeding the poor.”

Another place he will be missed is Presentation of Mary Academy, where he has served as school chaplain throughout his pastorate. Shared Sister Claudette Brunelle, “Father was a faithful and dedicated chaplain to our school, celebrating a monthly Mass and the various holy days with us, making God’s Word come alive for the youngsters. In his homilies, I was impressed by the way he always gave the students some practical advice on how to respond to God’s love, based on the readings of the day. He was excellent at connecting the theme of the Mass to their daily lives. In addition, Father Gary was always very supportive of our efforts in providing Catholic education to this area and encouraged parents to consider Catholic education. He allowed our students to address the parishioners after Mass during Catholic Schools Week to speak about PMA. He graciously allowed us the use of both the church and the parish hall for various functions, as needed. He also served on the PMA advisory school board since it was established several years ago, sharing his wisdom and experience.” As Father leaves the parish, with high hopes and prayers for its continued growth in the future, he is most proud of the fact that there are currently five men of the parish in seminary

studies for the priesthood, two young women in religious life and a third young woman just recently received a blessing and send off from Father Gary on August 21 as she enters the Dominican Sisters in Ann Arbor, MI. In addition, there are numerous young men and women in the parish giving serious thought to religious vocations. Also, he remarked on the caliber of a number of young people who take their faith very seriously and express it in the service they give, in the stands they have taken on values and moral issues and the witness they bring to their friends and peers. “I am very proud of our youth and young adults.” And so, even though he is saddened at the prospect of leaving, he said, “I can’t help but smile knowing that the future of the parish is in good hands, not only in the wonderful pastor who will be succeeding me, but in the zeal and energy of these young people that I have seen grow up over these past 18 years.” Father Gary’s new assignment takes him to Corpus Christi Parish Portsmouth. In 2006, three Portsmouth parishes, Immaculate Conception, St. Catherine of Siena and St. James, were merged into one. Father Gary grew up in Acushnet, MA, near the Cape, and this transfer takes him closer to the beach, and is a location he knows well. In 1983, two years before his priestly ordination, he was assigned to Immaculate Conception Parish for the summer, serving along with eight priests at the three parishes. He returns as the only pastor in Portsmouth. Father Gary will be fondly remembered as a priest of deep spirituality, prayerfulness, vision, dedication to the Liturgy and devotion to vocations, with a quick wit and charismatic personality. He is leaving St. Kathryn Parish in the capable hands of its new pastor, Reverend Joseph Cooper, who will continue to fan the flames set by Father Gary and perhaps ignite some of his own.
