variety of other historic civic buildings - including a town library, hose house, cemetery, common and memorials - were added to serve Salem’s ever- changing local government needs. The Pelham Library and Memorial Building was constructed in 1896 and includes a memorial room to honor Pelham men who fought in the Civil War. Its notable colonial revival design is by architect Frederick W. Stickney of the firm Stickney & Austin in Lowell, MA. Originally built as a library and meeting space for the town officers, it is now home to the Pelham Historical Society. The Salem Common Historic District and the Pelham Library and Memorial Building join a growing list of significant New Hampshire buildings, districts, sites, structures and objects that are important in defining the state’s history and character, and that have been designated to the National Register for Historic Places. New Hampshire’s Division of Historical Resources, the “State Historic Preservation Office,” was established in 1974. Historic preservation promotes the use, understanding and conservation of such resources for the education, inspiration, pleasure and enrichment of New Hampshire’s citizens. submitted by Shelly Angers, NH Department of Cultural Resources The New Hampshire Division of Historical
Resources is proud to announce that the Salem Common Historic District and the Pelham Library and Memorial Building have been honored by the United States Secretary of the Interior with placement on the National Register of Historic Places. Administered by the National Park Service,
which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation and is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect our historic and archaeological resources. These are the first listings to the National Register for both Salem and Pelham. Functioning as a local center of civic, religious, educational and community life for more than two hundred years, the Salem Common Historic District is a well-preserved example of a traditional rural New Hampshire townscape. The District’s meetinghouse was originally constructed in 1738 and underwent major renovations in 1838 and 1899; it continued to serve as the site for annual town meetings until 1958. Farmers and Gardeners Exchange Their Bounty
Resident cookie makers Ashley and Hunter Daniels with Mom
by Robyn Hatch Even with the threat of Hurricane Irene heading
our way, they few who dared to venture to the first Windham Hobby Gardener and Farmer Xchange on August 27 did not leave un-rewarded. With the welcome of a tent set, Rob and Frank as the local guitar artists, playing in the background, the exchange began. Stephanie Daniels bought fresh homemade chocolate chip and oatmeal cookies while Mike Greenberg came well stocked with fresh potatoes, washed and bagged yellow beans, eggplant, squash and bags of fresh tomatoes. The whole purpose was to exchange items,
Frank Hertzber and Rob Boyce, acoustic guitar players from Londonderry
not to make money and sell. Questions on the vegetables and recipes were exchanged. Peri Neville would like to thank all who attended the first event and would like to see it grow into a regular community event. There are already plans for the next event - the most unique shaped and ugly vegetable contest. The winners will be announced in the local newspapers. This is a great time to bring items to exchange, and learn about other items and watch as bartering goes on with vegetables and recipes. For more information visit
